Shy Bairns Get Nowt
Classic denim utility wear meets opulent embellishment. Vintage glass beads, donated gold bullion and off-cut metallic leather come together to illustrate the much-loved Geordie slogan ‘Shy Bairns Get Nowt’ onto a premium denim jacket. Lamin Gibba of Jerry J brought the vision for his fashion event at the Boiler Shop, Newcastle, later showcased at the Grainger Markert as part of the British Fashion Council’s national programme, weaving together Ghanaian and Geordie influences with a range of creative local talent. We were handed the jackets to embellish however we saw fit, taking inspiration from the gold topstitch typically found on indigo denim, the intricate zig-zag ironwork of the Tyne bridges, and using materials that were all thoughtfully selected for their aesthetic value and low environmental impact. The result was a high-impact look that glittered down the runway, its varied materials and deliberate texture catching the light from every angle, and we were delighted when it was chosen as Lamin’s final look to close the show.
