SHY BAIRNS GET NOWT

The hand embellishment on these jackets was created for the ‘Shy Bairns Get Nowt’ fashion event, hosted by Jerry J at the Boiler Shop, Newcastle. Bringing together Ghanaian and Geordie influences, Jerry J collaborated with a diverse range of creatives to bring his vision to life. The style of the lettering was inspired by the gold topstitch traditionally found on indigo denim garments, the geometric patterns inspired by our rich architectural and engineering heritage in the North-East, the intricate patterns in the bridges on the Tyne being a particular influence. The materials used were off-cut pigskin leather (sourced from Le Prevo over 10 years previously), vintage glass bugle beads purchased at an antiques fair, and gold bullion that was kindly donated (from a contact who used to specialise in goldwork embroidery). The final result was a high-impact look that glittered down the runway, thanks to the varied reflective properties of the materials we used, and we were delighted it was also chosen as the designer’s final look to close the show.
